It is important that preschoolers have the opportunity to listen to stories and have the chance to interact with books on a daily basis.
Since preschoolers are always interested in all kinds of different topics, I love putting lists of books for preschoolers with various fun topics. And since most of my readers are moms of preschoolers, I decided to put together a list of the best preschool books.
The books in this list are great for adding to your preschooler’s own collection, giving as gifts for birthday or Christmas presents, or just checking out at the library. Each book has an educational purpose, and I’ve gone into depth about each book below!
To make the most our of your reading time with your preschooler, allow him/her to explore the pages with you, point to the words as you read them, and make sure you ask them tons of age-appropriate questions as you read!

Learning about body parts/exercise:
From Head to Toe by Eric Carle
Teaches about different parts of the body and ways to exercise with different animals. It’s interactive and gets preschoolers up and moving.
Alphabet Books:
Chicka Chicka Boom Boom by Bill Martin, Jr. and John Arcahmbault
Teaches the alphabet in a cute and fun way, with a lively rhyme.
Alphabeep: A Zipping, Zooming ABC by Debora Pearson
This book covers the names of vehicles from A-Z with a fun rhyming pattern.
Rhyming Books:
One of the best ways for children to learn about rhyming words is to make up silly, nonsense words and that’s exactly what Dr. Seuss does with this book. And the tongue twisters are sure to make your preschooler laugh.
This book is so funny! While it is full of humor, it’s also full of rhyming words. The unruly mustache is sure to make your kids squeal with laughter!
Sequencing and Cause/Effect:
The Napping House by Audrey Wood
This book is great for teaching repetitive text, sequencing, and cause/effect. The delightful rhyming words leads up to what happens when too many people and animals pile up into a bed.
Predicting/Inferencing:
If You Give A Pig A Party by Laura Numeroff
This book makes the list because not only is it fun, but it teaches kids to make predictions and use critical thinking skills. Before you turn the page, let your child imagine what will happen if you give a pig a pancake…
Days Of The Week:
Cookie’s Week by Cindy Ward and Tomie dePaola
This book is great for teaching days of the week as kids delight in watching what Cookie the kitten does each day.
Colors:
Pete the Cat: I Love My White Shoes by Eric Litwin
This hilariously funny book teaches preschoolers about colors as Pete keeps stepping in different things that change the color of his shoes.
Counting:
The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle
This classic book is a MUST-HAVE! If you get no other book from this list, please add this one to your collection. It is my all-time recommendation as the best preschool book! Teaches counting, days of the week, and metamorphosis.
