Christmas is VERY much upon us, and with Christmas comes all those holiday parties! One of the holiday parties you may be invited to is an Ugly Sweater party! And if you don’t want to spend too much money on a sweater, you may want to make your own. Some “Ugly Sweaters” can set you back about $50-$60, and I don’t know about you, but I don’t pay that kind of money for ugly. I’m very happy to say that you can easily make your own sweater and I’m going to show you how with this post: DIY Ugly Sweater! (Keep reading to see how much the final product cost me)
This is a very fun project for Mom or a group of your friends to do! Just think: you could host a DIY Ugly Sweater makin’ party with your friends and then you can turn around and host a party for everyone to show off their sweaters! How fun would that be?
My husband and I {well, mostly me} decided that we should host our own Annual Ugly Sweater party because it’s a great way to get a big group of your friends and their kids together before the holidays, plus it’s hard not to have fun and laugh when everyone is wearing an ugly Christmas sweater! I’m still laughing…
Ok, so let me show you how you can make your own Ugly Sweater!
Disclaimer: No sweaters were harmed in the process of turning them UGLY!

DIY Ugly Sweater Instructions
Ok, let’s get to creating those UGLY sweaters! Make sure you have enough space to craft on and a cute sweater. It can literally be any sweater in your closet, and don’t worry: it won’t get ruined.
Step 1: Take a quick trip to Hobby Lobby and purchase all of your supplies. Hobby Lobby’s brand: A Tree For Me has TONS of tiny ornaments and such for a tabletop Christmas tree, so these would work perfectly for your sweater. AND most of the time, Hobby Lobby has their Christmas supplies at 40-50% off, PLUS if you have a smart phone you can download their app for an additional 40% off coupon (can’t be used on sale items).
Step 2: Decide which sweater you’ll decorate. I chose to decorate this basic red turtleneck sweater that I really like! (But don’t want to ruin)
Step 3: Find a pattern online to use for your sweater. I decided to decorate a really gaudy tree for my sweater. I used the pattern found here.
Step 4: Start gluing your stuff on! The best way to glue things to felt is with a hot glue gun, but just use a little dot at a time. Too much glue could cause the felt to melt and the glue will come through.
Step 5: Continue gluing stuff on your pattern until you’re finished. Here you can see I used tiny red ribbons, metallic discs as ornaments, sparkly gold thread (similar) as the garland, and some Christmas buttons (similar) as more gaudy ornaments.
I really don’t think you can go wrong here. The gaudier, the better
Step 6: Grab your sweater and pin your decorated tree into place. I used embroidery thread to sew the tree to the sweater because it’s thicker than regular thread and easier to remove once the party is over. I just sewed big blanket stitches by hand all around the tree.
Step 7: Next, sew on some other gaudy goodies. To attach these presents (similar) to the sweater, I used embroidery thread again and sewed around the ribbon on the packages directly to the sweater. Once the party was over, I snipped the thread from the inside of the sweater, and voila! I also used gold colored safety pins to attach the gold tinsel to the neckline and bottom of the sweater.
And there you have it, your DIY Ugly Sweater is all done! Add a blinking light necklace and you’ll be extra gaudy and light up like a Christmas tree! And when the party is over, everything is removable and your sweater will return to it’s normal, ‘non-ugly’ state!
Final Cost of my DIY Ugly Sweater: $18
