Eucalyptus Essential Oil Playdough

February 18, 2015 By Erica Leggiero, M.S. Ed. 10 Comments

Essential Oil Playdough

I’m so excited to bring you Essential Oil Playdough Week! Each day I’ll introduce one new playdough made with a different essential oil and discuss it’s benefits!

Our family began using essential oils a year ago, and I’m fascinated by how much they have helped our family in every area of our lives from cooking to healing to play recipes! We’ve incorporated essential oils into our daily lives and I can’t imagine our life without them.

Every essential oil can be safely used aromatically and topically, while some can be used internally. For our playdough recipes, by using essential oils and playing with the dough, our children are being benefited by the aromatic properties of the oil.

Today, we’ll be introducing Eucalyptus Essential Oil playdough!

Ingredients:

  • 1 C. Flour
  • 1 Tbsp. Oil (vegetable/canola)
  • 1 C. Water
  • 1/2 C. Salt
  • 1 Tbsp. Cream of Tartar
  • Food Coloring {green}
  • Eucalyptus Essential Oil

Steps:

1. Place all ingredients in a pot and whisk them together.

2. Add about 4 drops of green food coloring {add more/less to your desire}

3. Heat on med/high until mixture clumps together (this happens very quickly).

4. Stir the mixture the entire time to prevent sticking. It will begin to pull away from the sides of the pot.

5. Once it clumps nicely, put on wax paper to cool.

6. AFTER your dough has cooled, add 5-6 drops of Eucalyptus essential oil.

7. Kneed until dough is soft and aromatic. Add more drops of oil to your liking.

8. Play & Enjoy!

Benefits of Eucalyptus Essential Oil

Eucalyptus essential oil has a wonderful menthol smell, with a calming aroma. Because of the many influential compounds found in eucalyptus, it is a key ingredient in cough and throat medicines and chest ointments. Eucalyptus is used widely both for its calming and clearing properties as well as to ease breathing* {doterra.com}

Eucalyptus playdough is perfect for a child to play with when they are feeling under the weather, or suffering from a  common cold.

I hope you enjoy this quick and easy Lemon Playdough Recipe and that your kiddos just love playing with the scented playdough!

Eucalyptus Essential Oil Playdough is great aromatherapy for relieving little one’s cold symptoms!

    I love making scented playdough with my kids, too!
    I’m going to check on your link for vegetable dyed playdough next.
    But first, I’m curious about what you know about children and eucalyptus. I thought I had read that the essential oil can harm their respiratory system? I’m not clear on the details, but I know the kidsafe version of thieves oil does not contain eucalyptus.

      Vegetable dyed playdough sounds awesome! I don’t know much about children and eucalyptus, but I have heard the same as you. Not in the ways of harming their respiratory systems, but that using eucalyptus oil on them can sometimes slow their breathing down to much. That’s why I love this playdough–you can add as little or as much as you want and just the aromas are so nice. I feel comfortable using eucalyptus oil on my little boy, and I’ve successfully done so before, but each mom should trust her instincts and do what she feels safe for her child 🙂

    I have never used eucalyptus essential oil, but I have used Vick’s vapo rub-and I think it is the eucalyptus that makes it work so well! It really helps unstuff a stuffy nose.

      Yes! It’s the eucalyptus! I used to rub Vick’s on me every time I had a stuffy nose, but now I just use Eucalyptus oil and my nose become instantly unstuffed within seconds! It really is amazing!
