How To Make Mardi Gras Cupcakes

March 4, 2014 By Erica Leggiero, M.S. Ed. Leave a Comment

In celebration of one of my favorite holidays {I am a born & raised New Orleans gal}, I decided to share with you all this great cooking activity you can do with your kids to celebrate MARDI GRAS!!

 Cooking with your kids is a great way to spend quality time with them and really encourage their language skills to blossom! These are quick, simple, and easy and you can even listen to Mardi Gras music {any Jazz will do} while cooking!

 Oh, and for those of you watching your diet, that doesn’t apply today. After all, Mardi Gras translates to Fat Tuesday, so eat up buttercup!

What You’ll Need:

  • White Cake Mix
  • 1 container of White Icing
  • Food Coloring {red/blue, purple, green, yellow}
  • 3 Ziplock Baggies
  • Cupcake Liners
  • Mardi Gras Doubloons
  • Mardi Gras Baby {optional}

Instructions:

1. Mix the cupcake mix exactly as instructed on the box
2. After your batter is mixed, spoon the batter equally into 3 separate baggies. You should now have 3 baggies filled with white cake batter.
3. Use the food coloring to add a few drops to each baggie. You will need one purple bag, one green bag, one yellow bag. After adding the drops of food coloring, squish and mix the baggies until the white cake batter is colored appropriately. You should now have 1 purple bag of mix, 1 green bag of mix, and 1 yellow bag of mix.
4. Seal your bags up and cut one of the bottom corners off {so that you can squeeze the batter out}
5. In your muffin pan directly or in the muffin liners, squeeze the batter out of each bag until you fill the muffin cups up. 1/3 purple, 1/3 green, and 1/3 yellow.
6. Bake as directed on cake mix instructions
7. While your cupcakes are baking, begin preparing your icing in the color of your choice using food coloring!

THAT’S IT! When your cupcakes come out of the oven, decorate with purple, green, or yellow icing! I even put purple and green sprinkles on top of ours and I had some plastic doubloons {special Mardi Gras coins} that I purchased at the Dollar Tree.

*Optional: It’s tradition in New Orleans King Cakes to put a plastic baby in the cake. The tradition is that whoever gets the slice of cake with the baby has to buy the next king cake. You can totally do this at home using a plastic Mardi Gras baby and just stick it in one of the cupcakes when they are done baking. *Beware of choking hazards!

Hope this helps you celebrate Mardi Gras no matter where you are! If you are able to make these cupcakes, post a picture in the comment section below!
