Tie Dye Ornaments

December 3, 2014 By Erica Leggiero, M.S. Ed. Leave a Comment

Today, I am SO excited to be sharing these easy handmade Christmas ornaments for kids! These Tie-Dye Ornaments are super fun, super easy, and super beautiful! They are great for developing fine motor skills {grasping and squeezing the paint bottle}, learning color names, AND exploring with the mixing of colors.

I love these ornaments because they allow the child to get as creative as they want, mixing the colors they want. So, while all the ornaments are the same shape and size, the colors and swirls are all so different, creating a myriad of rainbows.

For your ornaments, you will need:
  • Glass ball ornaments  which I found at Target. You can also get clear plastic ornaments as long as you can open the top to squeeze paint in
  • Any acrylic craft paint, which you can get here or at Hobby Lobby or Michaels. Make sure they are in a squeeze bottle
  • Paper towels
  • Baker’s Twine, which can be found at any craft store
To make your ornaments:

First, grab a ball ornament and take the top off (this is a job for an older child or adult)

Choose 2 or 3 colors of paint and squeeze one color in the ornament at a time. You want to squeeze the paints in 3 or 4 stripes down the sides of the ornament, so it coats the ornament rather than just squeezing all the paint into the bottom of the ball.

After you squeeze in all the colors you’d like to use, place a paper towel over the opening of your ornament. Turn the ornament upside down, sideways, or shake it if you want so that the colors become mixed and coat the whole ornament. After the ball is coated, let the excess paint drip out of the ornament onto the paper towel or wastebasket so the paint inside dries quickly.

After the ball is coated and the excess paint is dumped out, you can replace the hood of the ornament and string with twine. The cool thing about these ornaments is that you don’t have to let them dry before hanging!

Done! That’s it! These easy handmade Christmas ornaments are fun, pretty, and a great project for little hands. What a perfect gift idea for your child’s teacher!  I just love the varieties of colors and swirls you get with these ornaments and they look beautiful hanging on the tree.
