How To Make Reindeer Food

December 22, 2014 By Erica Leggiero, M.S. Ed. Leave a Comment

One of my and my son’s favorite Christmas traditions is to make a batch of reindeer food for Santa’s reindeer. When I was younger, we always left carrots out on the front porch for the reindeer, so I wanted to continue the tradition with Mason, but with our own spin on it. I couldn’t wait to share our own recipe for reindeer food with all of you!

Making reindeer food is something we look forward to every year and it’s a great kid-friendly activity that a child of any age can participate in.

Let’s face it, Santa gets a LOT of cookies, and his reindeers get left out. And I know for a fact that Rudolph loves reindeer food!

So, while Santa is busy stuffing presents under our trees and in our stockings, let’s leave a treat for the reindeer to eat while they wait on Santa! And the reindeers do most of the work flying the sleigh around all night, so they need to have full tummies.

Luckily, today I’m going to share our super easy recipe for making reindeer food, and guess what? It literally takes 5 minutes to whip up!

Easy peasy, right?

1. Pour a tablespoon {or 2} of oatmeal in the bowl

2. Pour 1 small box of raisins in the bowl

3. Sprinkle just a little, or a LOT, of red and green sprinkles into the bowl. Sprinkle until your heart’s content

4. MOMMY’S JOB ONLY: Cut the carrots into bite size pieces {Teachable moment: While chopping the carrots, talk to your child about knife safety and make sure they keep their little fingers out of the way until you’re done}. Add carrots to the bowl

5. Stir

Voila! You’re all done!

6. Label a ziplock baggie with “Reindeer Food” so when you stick it in the fridge, Daddy won’t think it’s that morning’s latest oatmeal recipe 😉

See? I told you it was THAT easy!

Now, just store your bag of reindeer food in the fridge until Christmas Eve. In the past we used to add glitter to our mix so when we sprinkled it in the grass Christmas Eve, you could see it sparkling in the grass. But now since Mason is 7, he realized that reindeers don’t eat glitter, so he didn’t want to add it to his this year.

On Christmas Eve night before tucking the kiddos in bed, leave a plate of cookies out for Santa and sprinkle the reindeer food on the grass out front. Or you can leave it in a bowl on the porch.

Rudolph + company will surely love you! And besides, what an easy way to add a little more “magic” to your Christmas traditions.
